Command (Beta)

This model is in beta.

Our number one priority is to ensure that we are making our large language models safe, accessible, and useful. Our Command model is still in beta and we are aware of some of the limitations around safety. As you experiment with the model and run into issues, please help us by flagging it to our team by emailing us at [email protected]

command-xlarge-20221108 is a trained version of Cohere's x-large model that’s conditioned to respond better to zero-shot, instruction-like prompts. Despite its beta status, Command qualitatively outperforms all existing models on zero-shot tasks (prompts that don’t contain examples). You can expect to see the performance of command-beta evolve drastically over the coming weeks.

Prompting Best Practices

These best practices are specific to the first release of Command and will evolve as we push more improvements to production.

  • DO add punctuation at the end of your prompt (e.g., “.”)
  • DO NOT add few-shot examples to your prompt, as this current version of the model is only optimized for zero-shot style prompting and may regress in performance if examples are included
  • DO note that the current model is not yet optimized for generating long form content (may hallucinate beyond 300+ tokens), or powering conversational agents.

Example Prompts

Write me a poem about Leetcode.

I am a leetcode problem,
I am here to trouble you,
I will give you a headache,
And make you want to cry.

Summarize the following article.

Article: No Fred VanVleet, no problem. Pascal Siakam scored a game-high 31 points and finished with his fifth double-double of the young season as the Toronto Raptors powered past the Atlanta Hawks 139-109 on Monday at Scotiabank Arena. Siakam did damage by getting to the free-throw line, hitting 13-16 shots. The 28-year-old added 12 rebounds and six assists on a night where VanVleet sat with back stiffness. “As long as we do the things we do well, we’ll always have a chance to win,” Siakam told Sportsnet’s Savanna Hamilton postgame. Scottie Barnes handled most of the point guard duties, displaying some added versatility to his already impressive skill set. Barnes had 21 points, seven rebounds, and eight assists while hitting a career-high five made shots from three. Garry Trent Jr. also finished with 21 points, with OG Anunoby chipping in 14 points with six rebounds and a game-high six steals. Rookie forward Christian Koloko made his first career start, playing 21 minutes and adding three blocks with nine points. “Everyone played with a lot of energy. OG was great for us today, disrupting the offense and making plays on defense,” Siakam said of his teammates. Guard Dejounte Murray had a team-high 20 points for the visiting Hawks. Point guard Trae Young struggled with his shot on Monday, finishing 3-13 from the field. The Raptors improved to 4-3 on the season. On Wednesday, Toronto will travel to San Antonio for a road matchup with the Spurs and former Raptor Jakob Poeltl.

Can users train Command?
Users cannot train command-beta in OS at this time. However, our team can handle this on a case by case basis. Please email [email protected] if you’re interested in training this model.

When can users expect to see another improvement in performance for Command?
Command will emerge from beta in March of 2023, however users can expect performance improvements across the coming weeks.
